It’s not a Shame, there is a Solution
If involuntary urination is what bothers you, seek the help of a urologist because modern medicine offers both medicines and treatment methods that can solve your problem.

According to the health statistics, every 4th woman, aged between 30 and 60, had at least one episode of involuntary urination in their lifetime. Involuntary urination in women mostly happen during coughing, sneezing, laughing, physical exertion or sexual intercourse, when the pressure in the abdomen increases.

- Involuntary leaking out of urine or urinary incontinence is a much more common problem among women than men, which is a result of anatomical and physiological differences between the sexes. Involuntary leaking out of urine most often occurs in young women during pregnancy or after childbirth, and in the elderly due to a decrease in oestrogen levels during menopause. Diabetes, obesity, smoking, genitourinary surgery, or radiation, significantly contribute to the development of the disease, so it is very important that the patient consults a doctor in time - says a Master of Pharmacy – medical biochemist Bojana Podgorac Milenković, Director of Marketing for Hemofarm Rx Portfolio.

Involuntary urination during pregnancy is mainly transitory, and you should consult your doctor if it lasts longer than 6 weeks after childbirth. Frequency of this problem increases with age. It is surprising that involuntary urination in USA is almost 25 percent more common than coronary heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension individually in the female population over 60 years.

- Discomforts are usually accompanied by the feeling of shame, low self-esteem, retreating into oneself. For example, involuntary leaking of urine during sexual intercourse is a very serious problem which affects the quality of life and impairs emotional and partnership relations, because a woman begins to avoid physical closeness. In general, women of all ages find it difficult to cope with the fact that they do not control urination, have a feeling of discomfort and this impairs social interactions, work ability and mental health of women. That is why it is important to seek medical help as soon as possible – emphasizes our interlocutor.

Unfortunately, due to the feeling of shame, as many as 2/3 of patients will not say anything about the symptoms of incontinence to the doctor, especially when it comes to milder forms, which are the most common. People seek professional help only when the problem progresses.

- In order to determine the best modality of treatment precise diagnosis on the type and degree of problem is needed. If a patient sees a doctor on time, as much as 80 percent of urinary incontinence cases can be cured or significantly improved. Therapy with modern medicines such as solifenacin and mirabegron, which greatly alleviate the problems associated with hyperactive bladder syndrome, has a very important place in the treatment of incontinence – explains further our interlocutor.

Apart from conservative treatment with medicines, surgery is also an option, depending on the type of incontinence. Important advice can also be obtained through education.

- Female patients are also recommended special exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, to change the diet, reduce body weight, quit smoking. The most important thing, however, is not to ignore the problem, to reject the feeling of shame, and to make the discomfort an incentive to go to the doctor, because thanks to timely diagnosis and adequate treatment, your problem can be successfully solved – says Bojana Podgorac Milenković from Hemofarm.
