Pollution and Poor Nutrition are the Path to Disease
Fast food as well as a significant decline in food quality due to increasing environmental pollution, but also the use of pesticides and herbicides, make the diet increasingly unhealthy. That is why dietary supplements are ever more necessary for preserving good health.

What restores, nurtures, nourishes, strengthens, raises the pleasure of living is good for health, but the modern way of life generally does the opposite. Insufficient movement, stress, fast food, smoking, alcohol, daily exposure to electromagnetic radiation through constant use of mobile phones and hours spent in front of a computer, all this seriously impairs our health.

- The risk of development of cardiovascular diseases increases by improper nutrition, primarily excessive intake of bakery products, sugar and fat and it is a path to seriously impair one’s health. In contrast, low amount of fat, as a result of various, popular and aggressive diets also impairs health. In the long run, inadequate nutrition results in health problems and shortage of nutritive substances necessary for the strong immunity and proper functioning of the body - warns Milan Ljubinković, MD Sales Manager for the Western Balkans, OTC/CHC Portfolio from Hemofarm.

Health statistics in Serbia are alarming. More than 50,000 people die of heart and blood vessel diseases every year, more than 20,000 people die of cancer, the number of people with diabetes is close to one million, and as many as 44 percent of men and 31 percent of women are obese. What to do to start changing these statistics?

- Invest in prevention and health education of population, but it is an issue of responsibility of every individual. Regular health checks enable to detect the disease on time and that’s why you should see your doctor once a year. The wellness exam will provide an insight into basic laboratory tests, value of blood pressure, heart and lungs findings, blood vessel condition, and elevated blood sugar levels can be detected on time or some other negative changes. Your doctor will explain to you why it is important to be active and how to eat properly - advises Milan Ljubinković, MD.

Pollution of air, water, soil is growing sharply, and the quality of food is falling. Due to the use of NPK fertilizers, the soil became overcropped, so pesticides and herbicides are necessary to have better yields. Research conducted in the United States shows that today, white wheat flour contains three and a half times less zinc, six times less vitamin E, three and a half times less iron, vitamin B3 seven times, and calcium two and a half times less than flour eaten 60 years ago. The level of nutrients in fruits and vegetables has dropped significantly over the past 3 decades as well.

- The prerequisite for preservation of good health is proper and varied diet. Our body needs 47 ingredients, including 13 vitamins, 6 minerals, 14 trace elements, two unsaturated fatty acids and eight amino acids for a strong immune system and normal metabolic processes. Accelerated pace of living however, made the most people to have improper diet, to skip meals, to insufficiently intake fruits and vegetables, too many bakery products. The body is thus left without important vitamins and minerals necessary for preservation of health. That’s why it is important today to take also dietary supplements - says our interlocutor.

Dietary supplements are products that contribute to strengthening of natural functions of the body by their active substances and work as a supplement to improper and impoverished diet. Supplementation with vitamin and mineral complexes is widespread and generally accepted in the world.

- It has been established that the intake of appropriate nutrients can prevent the development of numerous diseases. With a sufficient intake of calcium and vitamin D, for example, strong bones are built in childhood. It is also known that iron is necessary for the growth and development of children, but it is equally important for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The intake of the prescribed amount of magnesium enables proper function of the heart muscle, maintains the normal tone of the blood vessels, and lowers high blood pressure. Therefore, dietary supplements are useful aid for all ages and can help patients in faster recovery, developing children, the elderly in improving health, as well as athletes whose needs for vitamins and minerals are significantly increased - said Milan Ljubinković, MD from Hemofarm.
